Airtel 4G Controversy
Posted 8 years ago
With the second wave ofAirtel 4G ads now on in full swing, Sasha Chettri has found herself stuck with the nickname - The Airtel 4G girl. Despite becoming the face of the 4G Internet campaign, she has received heavy criticism as being irritating due to the scale of exaggeration portrayed by her in the ads regarding the availability of Airtel 4G cell-reception even in the remotest parts of the country.
The second wave of five ads followed Chettri through India, in an attempt to emphasize Airtel 4G’s network reach. Chettri constantly tried to rid herself from getting cell reception but due to Airtel’s incredible accessibility, is unable to do so. One of the wittiest responses to the campaign that I can remember reading online was,” If she’s trying so hard to get away from Airtel 4G reception, why doesn’t she try visiting remote locations like Delhi or Gurgaon?!”
The ads themselves though aren’t badly shot or produced. It’s quite evident that the producers and ad-heads decided to take a page out of Bollywood’s play book. Much like how the Indian film industry came up with movies like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Queen, the Indian telecommunications giant too seems to be selling picturesque backdrops rather than its services in its latest series of Airtel 4G ads. All 5 ads were shot in amazing locations across India. The ads can be seen below:
Lush forests in Ettimadai, Tamil Nadu:
Igatpuri in Maharashtra:
Snow-capped mountains in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh:
Umiam Lake in Shillong:
Gorious sand dunes found in Pushkar, Rajasthan:
